Nekatha The auspicious time and date for the wedding, calculated by an astrologer based on both partners’ horoscopes. Every part of the ceremony is scheduled around this specific moment. It isn’t a flexible guideline, it’s the anchor the entire day is built on.
Stepping Onto the Poruwa The couple enters the Poruwa together, greeting each other with palms held together in respect. A close relative offers betel leaves, which the couple accepts and places on the platform as a symbolic offering. The bride’s father then places her hand in the groom’s, a gesture of trust and blessing.
Nalangu and the Ring Exchange The couple exchanges rings during the ceremony, a public confirmation of commitment. In the Nalangu ritual, their little fingers are tied together with a gold thread, symbolising unity. Blessings from elders and religious figures follow, often for prosperity, fertility, and a long marriage.
Lighting the Oil Lamp The ceremony closes with the couple lighting a brass oil lamp together. It represents the promise to keep their love burning throughout their marriage. Traditional music, including the well-known chant Jayamangala Gatha, is sung to bless the couple.
The Nekatha timing is genuinely fixed, sometimes falling early in the morning depending on the astrologer’s calculation. A venue needs the Poruwa platform and seating fully ready before that window opens, not still being arranged as guests arrive. Sri Lankan weddings also vary by community. Sinhalese Buddhist weddings follow the Poruwa ceremony described above, while Sri Lankan Moor weddings blend Arab, Tamil, and Islamic traditions, and Sri Lankan Tamil weddings often include the Thaali ceremony.
